In a shocking turn of events, Sunjay Kapur, the former husband of Bollywood star Karisma Kapoor and Chairman of the prominent auto components firm Sona Comstar, passed away on June 12, 2025, after suffering a sudden heart attack. The tragedy occurred while Kapur, aged 53, was participating in a polo match in England, according to multiple news reports and official statements.
Sona Comstar confirmed the untimely demise in a heartfelt statement, expressing profound sorrow over the loss of their Chairman and Non-Executive Director, Sunjay J. Kapur. The company noted that the incident took place in the UK, where Kapur was engaged in one of his favorite sports. “He passed away following a sudden heart attack in England, UK, on 12th June 2025, at the age of 53,” the statement read.
Initial reports from medical sources and eyewitnesses suggested that Kapur fell ill during the match, prompting immediate medical attention. While some sources speculated about the possibility of an allergic reaction—such as swallowing a bee—during the game, which could have contributed to the cardiac event, no official medical report has confirmed this as the cause. The exact circumstances are still under investigation.
The news sent shockwaves through both the business and entertainment communities in India and abroad. Suhel Seth, a well-known business consultant and friend of Kapur, shared his condolences on social media, writing, “Deeply saddened at the passing of @sunjaykapur: he passed away earlier today in England: a terrible loss and deepest condolences to his family and to his colleagues @sonacomstar …Om Shanti.”
Kapur’s alma mater, The Doon School, also paid tribute to the late industrialist. In a statement, the school described him as a distinguished alumnus, member of the Board of Governors, and Chair of the Sports and IT Committees. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Sunjay Kapur on 12th June 2025. A passionate entrepreneur, global business leader, and committed community servant, his legacy is marked by excellence, service, and a drive to make polo more accessible and inclusive,” the school said.
Educated in India, the UK, and the US, Sunjay Kapur was recognized as a visionary in the automotive industry. He led Sona Comstar to international acclaim and was actively involved in various industry bodies, including serving as the Chairman of the CII Northern Region, Co-Chairman of the Manufacturing Council at CII, and former President of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA). He was also the first Indian to be appointed Global Chairman of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization.
On a personal note, Kapur was married three times. His marriage to Karisma Kapoor, with whom he had two children, Samaira and Kiaan, was widely covered by the media. After their divorce, he married Priya Sachdev, and the couple welcomed a son, Azarias.
Just hours before his death, Kapur took to social media to express his grief over the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, writing, “Terrible news of the tragic Air India crash… May they find strength in this difficult hour.” This poignant post, reflecting his empathy and concern for others, was among his last public communications.
