Mumbai Local Train Accident: Five Dead, Several Injured

On Monday morning, June 9, 2025, a tragic accident occurred on Mumbai’s suburban railway network during the peak office rush hour, resulting in the deaths of five passengers and injuries to several others. The incident took place between Diva and Kopar stations on the Central Railway line.

Two overcrowded local trains were running parallel on adjacent tracks—one heading towards Kasara and the other towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). Due to heavy rush, many passengers were standing near the doors and on the footboards, a common but risky practice in Mumbai’s local trains. As the trains passed each other, the bags and bodies of passengers standing near the doors brushed against each other, causing some to lose balance and fall onto the tracks.

The accident happened around 9:30 AM near Mumbra station. Eyewitnesses reported that about seven to eight passengers lost their footing and fell. Emergency services quickly arrived, and the injured were rushed to Kalwa hospital. Unfortunately, five passengers succumbed to their injuries. Among the deceased are 23-year-old Ketan Dilip Saroj from Ulhasnagar, 34-year-old railway employee Vickey Babasaheb Mukhidal, and Rahul Santosh Gupta. The other victims are yet to be identified.

Railway officials stated that the collision was not between trains but between passengers traveling on footboards of trains moving in opposite directions. The narrow distance between the trains, especially on curves where tilting occurs, likely contributed to the accident.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his condolences and called the incident very unfortunate. The Railway Board announced that following this tragedy, all new local train rakes for Mumbai suburban services will be equipped with automatic door closure systems, and existing rakes will be retrofitted accordingly to enhance passenger safety.

Nashik Road Station Incident: Passenger Seriously Injured

On the same day, a separate accident occurred at Nashik Road railway station. A passenger traveling on the Haridwar Express suffered serious injuries while trying to board the moving train. His hand got stuck as he climbed onto the platform, causing him to fall. Railway police and staff quickly responded, pulling the emergency chain and rescuing the injured passenger, who was immediately taken to a hospital. His identity is currently unknown, and an investigation is underway.

The incident caused temporary confusion at the station, but authorities managed the situation promptly to ensure the passenger received urgent medical care.
